Georgia House Rabbit Society Celebrates 30 Years of Saving Rabbits’ Lives

Kennesaw, GAApril 21,2026 — The Georgia House Rabbit Society (GHRS), a nonprofit dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and adoption of domestic rabbits, is proud to celebrate its 30th anniversary this year. Since its founding in 1996, GHRS has rescued more than 5,200 rabbits and successfully placed over 5,000 into loving homes.

What began as a small, foster-based effort has grown into one of the nation’s largest rabbit-only shelters. Today, GHRS cares for 105 rabbits, with 98 housed at its shelter, supported by a dedicated team of 185 active volunteers and currently serving approximately 1,400 families and individual adopters. To commemorate this milestone, GHRS will host a 30th anniversary open house on April 25th from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at its shelter, located at 3114 Cherokee Street NW, Kennesaw, GA 30144. The event is free and open to the public.

Guests will have the opportunity to meet some of the organization’s adoptable rabbits, learn about rabbit care, and explore the shelter. The celebration will also feature door prizes, a scavenger hunt, and additional family-friendly activities throughout the day.

“This milestone represents not just the number of rabbits we’ve saved, but the strength of the community that has supported us for 30 years,” said Courtney Gurley, Shelter Manager of GHRS. “Every rabbit we care for is given a second chance because of our volunteers, adopters, and partners.”

The organization continues to expand its reach through partnerships with local animal control and shelter systems, including Cherokee, Cobb, Paulding, Forsyth, DeKalb/Fulton Lifeline, Athens-Clarke, and Douglas counties.

GHRS also works closely with veterinary partners such as Shepherd’s Heart, For Pets’ Sake, Windward Animal Hospital, and Animal Hospital of Towne Lake to ensure the highest standard of care for every rabbit.

“Reaching 30 years is an incredible achievement and a testament to the dedication of everyone who has been part of GHRS,” said Lisa Matragrano, Chair of the Board. “We remain committed to expanding our impact and ensuring that every rabbit has the opportunity for a safe, loving home.”

The celebration is made possible thanks to generous sponsors, including Clearly Loved Pets, Artful Rabbit, Belux Coffee Roasters, Supreme Petfoods (a small pet brand), For Pets’ Sake, and Shepherd’s Heart.

As GHRS looks toward the future, its mission remains the same: to rescue rabbits in need, provide exceptional care, and connect them with loving, permanent homes.
